Apple says it uses Amazon's custom AI chips
Apple Embraces AI Evolution #
Apple has integrated custom artificial intelligence chips from Amazon into its services, enhancing capabilities like search operations. This collaboration, announced at a prominent annual conference, reflects Apple’s willingness to leverage external technology for its innovative pursuits. “We have a strong relationship, and the infrastructure is both reliable, definite and able to serve our customers worldwide.”
The decision to utilize these advanced chips emphasizes a strategic endorsement of cloud technology, highlighting Apple’s commitment to enhancing its AI-driven functionalities amidst a competitive market. Historically, Apple has leaned on these resources for over ten years, optimizing AI services like Siri, Apple Maps, and Apple Music. By adopting Amazon’s Trainium and Graviton chips, Apple’s search services saw a notable 40% increase in efficiency.
Furthermore, Apple is considering employing the latest Trainium2 chip for pre-training its proprietary models. “In early stages of evaluating Trainium2 we expect early numbers up to 50% improvement in efficiency with pre-training.” This development indicates that these custom chips present not only a cost-efficient solution but also effective tools for advancing new AI technologies.
In alignment with its AI strategy, Apple introduced its major generative AI product, Apple Intelligence, this fall. The suite offers features such as summarizing notifications, rewriting emails, and generating emojis. Additional capabilities will incorporate integration with prominent AI platforms. Unlike other leading chatbots relying on large-scale server clusters, Apple’s approach effectively utilizes its device chips, like iPhone, iPad, or Mac, for processing, while complex requests continue to be processed on its M-series chips-operated servers.
